Dirk VanhoudtSenior researcher in the Energy Technology Unit of VITO

Dirk Vanhoudt is senior researcher in the Energy Technology Unit of VITO, the Flemish Institute for Technological Research. His main research topic is the development of next generation district heating grids. In that context, he was the technical coordinator of the Horizon 2020 STORM project, in which is about the development and demonstration of a generic district heating and cooling network controller. Currently, he is technical coordinator of the successor Horizon 2020 TEMPO project.

    Abstract:

Technologies to decrease district heating temperature levels – the TEMPO project

In the Horizon 2020 TEMPO project, 6 technologies are developed and demonstrated to reduce the temperature levels in district heating networks, encompassing digital solutions like a substation and heating installation fault detection tools and a smart controller, and innovative piping and buffers. After development, these technologies are implemented and tested in demonstration sides in Germany and Italy.
