Arnaldur Birgir Magnússon is a Project manager of utility information systems for Norðurorka. The main responsibility of utility information systems inside Norðurorka includes the management of technical drawings, registration of data regarding the utility network, management of sales meters, management of measuring equipment in regards to customer care, design and inspection of utility projects. I have a B.s.c in energy and mechanical engineering from Reykjavík University. Most of my work experience has been built up inside Norðurorka where I have worked my way up from a field worker to project manager.

Metering in multiple small utilities

Norðurorka runs the distribution of hot water in a large part of the Eyjafjörður area. The distribution system can be broken up into segments or sectors each with their own characteristics and challenges in regards to meters. I will in this presentation cover how we manage meters in these sectors. I will also talk about the possibility of how utility companies big or small can work together in this regard moving into the future of smart meters.

Building up district heating in hilly terrain

Norðurorka runs the distribution of hot water in a large part of the Eyjafjörður area. Running a distribution system in this area can be tricky since the area is surrounded by mountains and the height difference between low point and high points in the same distribution segment can be up to 260 meters. On top of that, there is also the challenge of maintaining heat over long distances to relatively few consumers. In the early days of the distribution system, this was all maintained by building houses above ground to house the necessary equipment like booster pumps, pressure controllers, and thermostatic circulation valves. Since building these houses can be both time and money consuming Norðurorka has moved on to housing this equipment in cabinets above ground without making maintenance harder. In this presentation, I will show samples of how this has been done in the past with actual cases.
